5 tech tips to start fresh this year

Welcome to a new year! There’s no better time to update your technology, accounts and cybersecurity awareness. Below are five quick tech tips to start fresh this year.

1. Back up your data

Backup your computer or laptop data on an external hard drive or cloud service.

2. Update your passwords

3. Clear your device’s cache

Cache can be stored on your devices while you are using internet browsers. The data can slow down your browser on your phone or your computer since it fills up storage. It is a good idea to clear it regularly. Cache clean-up can also protect temporary data including login information, addresses and any other personal information.

4. Clean your equipment

Dust can accumulate on your device and create sticky keys among other annoyances. It is a good idea to clean once a year. You can use canned air, or a microfiber cloth moistened with water.

5. Responsibly get rid of old equipment

If you are donating an old computer or smart phone, make sure you completely wipe the hard drive before the next person receives it. You can then take it to an electronic recycler or donate it to a local nonprofit or charity.
